Wind Projects to empower women in the Nova Scotian energy sector

SWEB Development announces Social Program Partnership with Women in Renewable Energy

“Those Projects mean a step in the right direction. No just from an environmental perspective, but also from the perspective of women in a field in which they are still underrepresented”, explains Joanna Osawe, President of Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE). Nova Scotia-based renewable energy company SWEB Development (SWEB) and its affiliates are pleased to announce their social program partnership with Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE). WiRE is a Non-profit Corporation who’s mission is to advance the role and recognition of women and other under-represented groups working in the energy sector.

The partnership was concluded as part of SWEB’s development of the wind energy projects “Blueberry Acres” in Cumberland County, “Red Spruce” in East-Hants and “Weavers Mountain” in Pictou County. It includes significant financial and non-financial contributions from the three projects in support of WiRE’s mission.

WiRE’s programming includes national and international chapters, student chapters, capacity-building field trips, networking meet-ups, awards recognition programs, student bursaries, speed mentoring, speed interviewing, spotlights, conferences, workshops, and more. SWEB is excited to be an active partner in promoting WiRE’s programming and implementing its support to advancement of women within the Nova Scotian’s renewable energy domain.

SWEB has submitted three wind energy projects across the Province into the Nova Scotia Rate Base Procurement Request for Proposals. The Rate Base Procurement aims to attract low-cost and innovative solutions to procure 1,100 GWh per year of renewable electricity for the Province of Nova Scotia. In addition to supporting Nova Scotia's goals to fight climate change, this procurement will encourage investment and create jobs.  

“We have worked hard to include tangible capacity building initiatives into our project development. We want to ensure that underrepresented groups like women get their fair chance to benefit from the jobs our projects will create”, says Sarah Rosenblat, Development Manager at SWEB.
